My sincerest condolences to Pat and the girls on their loss. Mike was my first comrade in arms upon joining the FRA in 1993 at Hamburg, NY. He was a great guy and my mentor beginning with my transition from a railroad employee to an OP Inspector.
He showed me the ropes, guided me, helped me, and above all, always had my back. He was by definition a true inspector guided by a conscience and dedication to doing what was right, not what was strictly by the book.
Mike and I formed a close bound that extended beyond a work tour. We often became a relief valve for each other during trying times.
Though I only worked with Mike for four years; that bond will last my life time.
