Obituary of George W. Thomas
Born and raised in Buffalo NY, George spent his life in service to his family, his country, and his home community. He attended Riverside High School and then became a proud member of the 101st Airborne Division of the US Army. He continued his dedication to helping others by embarking on a 26 year career as a Buffalo Police Officer, retiring as a Lieutenant.
George was also a successful business owner. He co-founded F&T Snowplowing & Removal and helped it grow from a small business into the thriving company it is today. In addition, he also inherited a neighborhood convenience store from his father. Instead of allowing the business to close and the people of the neighborhood to lose a much needed source of fresh food and groceries, he added it to his responsibilities and kept this popular family-owned corner store open. He was loved by his close-knit group of employees and was a friend to his customers, many who he got to know on a first name basis.
There's no shortage of hobbies on the list of George's favored activities. He enjoyed a range of hobbies including travel, boating, fishing, stamp collecting, softball, and bowling. As a bowler he competed in many local leagues as well as national tournaments. Ever the perfectionist, he bowled multiple perfect 300 games.
George was heavily involved in his church, Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta Parish. He was the president of the Holy Name Society and organizer of many successful fundraisers including Rummage Sales, Pancake Breakfasts, and Appliance Raffles.
George was a charismatic friend to many and loved to entertain with stories and gatherings at his home. His meticulously manicured backyard oasis included a diverse group of colorful trees and flowers surrounding a beautiful pool which saw lots of use during summers. George also prided himself on working the grill and treating his guests to wonderful meals, including his legendary annual Tenderloin Party!
George had a productive and successful life, but insisted on giving back as a generous philanthropist. He supported a wide variety of worthy causes to help the Military, Law Enforcement, and Hospitals. He also turned tragedy into inspiration when he created and funded a scholarship at Buffalo State College in memory of a dear nephew who was taken from us far too soon. Over the years George helped many aspiring college students in need to be able to continue their higher education and achieve their goals.
George was the Beloved husband of the late Mary, Devoted father of Michelle (David) Berkhoudt, Danielle (Mike Dirr) Thomas and Michael Thomas.; Loving grandfather of Jordan and Abby; Dear brother of George M. Thomas; Also survived by cousins, nieces, and nephews.
