My condolences to the Malovich family. I was devastated to hear the news from Michelle of his passing.
I met John when he moved into the Attica school district, junior high. With our similar interests and the Malovich family later moving to Varysburg, just a short walk down the street (Rt 98) from the Cannon family home, we became close friends. I have so many great, happy memories of my time with John, many of them centered around motorcycles, hockey and music. I fondly remember our time together:
- Watching On Any Sunday at the East Aurora theater, still a classic covering all categories of off road motorcycling
- Going to my first Sabres game with John and his Dad
- Riding dirt bikes together, his Suzuki 90 and scary fast CZ 125 motocrosser
- Reading the latest Motocross Action magazine, arguing over which was better, the Suzuki TM125 or the Honda Elsinore
- Camping out at Zoar Moto Park for the weekend, between our Freshman and Sophomore year, to watch the world’s best motocrossers, and ending up in a Honda poster at the uphill jump (look to the left of the front wheel)
- Hanging out at his house, mine and Jim Hartway’s (RIP)
- Watching Saturday Night Live back when it wasn’t so political and was just funny. Seeing the debut of a young singer on SNL who ended up being a favorite, Kate Bush
- Playing hockey on our pond, and at Holiday Twin Rinks
Once I moved away with the Air Force, I didn’t see John as often, but we would always meet up whenever I was back in town. Probably my biggest regret is that we never got to do the big Adventure Touring motorcycle ride we wanted to do together. He had talked of doing the TransAmerica Trail or the Silk Road. I miss you greatly, my friend.

Absolutely devastating news. John was someone that I looked up to and enjoyed since the moment I met him. I worked many years at Rick’s on main with John and remember being in high school dishwashing and thinking it was so cool that the bartender would shoot the breeze with someone as low on the totem pole as a I was. After moving up to bussing I was able to help John occasionally. He was always extremely appreciative and very generous. After a few years in the front of the house, John began to give me pointers and would eventually take me under his wing to teach me the craft of bartending. Nobody commanded and entertained a bar quite like John. He had a line, movie reference, joke, or could name any song from any genre in the blink of an eye. It’s with great sadness that I will never be able to truly thank him for having such a large and positive impact on my life. John’s legacy will forever live on through all his former patrons, co-workers, friends, and family that loved him so much. We lost a truly amazing, one of a kind individual way too soon.

I miss John living here in Los Angeles where I met him. I remember when he moved back to Buffalo. I helped store some of his belongings as it was supposed to be temporary. When he came into town, I let him stay with me and at the time I had a little dog. He would be home alone with the dog and didn't know what to do with her. Little did he know, she didn't know what to do with him. He did notice that minutes before me coming home, she would sit at the front door ready to greet me as I walked in. He was so perplexed as to how she knew I would be coming home soon. He would laugh about it and couldn't figure it out. John was hilarious and I never laughed so hard. His humor was rooted in intellect. I think he got sick of my birthday wishes, "Happy Birthday, John. Just kidding. April Fool's!"
I regret not staying in touch with him while he was in Buffalo. He was an authentic individual, which is rare and special. He will be missed.

I was privileged to be friends with John in Orlando and Los Angeles over the years. We shared an enthusiasm for movies and even collaborated on some writing. John was drawn to the oddballs and outliers of the world, seeing a little of himself in them. Yet he could converse with anyone about anything, revealing a formidable intellect and a vast appreciation of all that life offered. It’s heartbreaking for him to have been taken so soon, and though we hadn’t seen each other for years, having settled on opposite sides of the country, I’ll miss the chats we’d have to keep current with each other. RIP, John.

I met John in Daytona Florida when we both worked at Mr P’s. It was a fun time. We saw each other a few times after we both moved home up North. Although it has been since then, we were able to stay in touch and remain friends. I was so sad to hear of his diagnosis and so grateful that we were able to speak one last time.
Rest in Peace dear John, Rest in Peace.
My condolences to you Michelle and all your family and all of John’s friends.

Just so sad John had to leave so soon. We shared endless movie references across the bar…it felt like we were in the scenes. I guess in a way, we were. I will keep those memories close.
